Last Friday, a select group of students from Years 7 to 9 went on a trip to Sutton High for GDST languages day. It was a competition between GDST schools with different events for each year group. Year 7 took part in a spelling bee for languages: French, Spanish and German, before learning “Frozen” in multiple languages.
Year 8 attended a cultural quiz, testing their knowledge on the lifestyle and traditions of European countries in French, Spanish, German and Latin.
Having written, staged and learnt our own plays, year 9 performed short sketches about a “first meeting”. Royal High School had groups for languages: French, German and Latin. The French and Latin groups came second and German came third.
The Latin based their sketch on the first meeting between Helen of Troy and Paris. The German group performed a scene about new found acquaintances at the theatre during the interval and becoming friends. The French team performed a play titled “A Catfishy Situation” due to its storyline of an online meeting where the characters Pierre and Madeleine did not get their happy ending.
One of our year 7’s, Imogen, won the prize for best comment about the day. She spoke about what languages meant to her. We all enjoyed the day and would recommend it to anyone who is interested in languages. It was extremely interesting and we can all agree it was beneficial for our learning, listening to our peers.
We would like to thank the language teachers, Madame White, Señora Vercher and Frau Wilkie, who took us on this trip and made the day possible for us.
