Biathlon Time Trials, Bath University 5th October

Girls from the Royal High competed in the GB Pentathlon Biathlon Time Trials at Bath University on Friday 5th October.

Our U13 Team of Sophie Jones, Emily Jones, Ellie Gresham (year 7’s) and Lottie Silverton (year 8) competed in the morning, with a 100m swim and 1600m run. Incredibly ALL of the girls gained personal bests which saw the team placed 1st overall! Individually Sophie was placed 3rd, Emily 5th, Lottie 7th and Ellie 19th.

A fantastic achievement for the girls, we are very proud of their success.
Many thanks to Mrs Gresham, Mrs Vance, and Mrs Bamford for assisting on the day.

The Challenge Shield

Monday 8th October

Royal High School v Clifton High School

L 2 – 4

This was the 102nd year of ‘The Challenge Shield’, the annual 1st team hockey match between the two schools and it was Clifton High School’s turn to host at Coombe Dingle Sports Complex. It was great to see Mrs Holmes and Mrs Guest supporting the fixture and making their voices heard over all of the Clifton High School parents who came out to watch.

The first 5minutes of play were quite scrappy from both teams however the Royal High School gained some momentum and more importantly, periods of possession. Tabby Gallen made some fantastic runs down the right wing and it was impressive to see the girls always fight for an outcome in the D. Unfortunately, this pressure did not pay off and Clifton High School were able to keep the score at 0-0. The ball was end to end throughout the game but Clifton High School were able to convert 3 chances when their forward line broke through our defence and had a 1 on 1 opportunity with our goal keeper. By half time, the score was 3-1 to Clifton.

In the 2nd half, our RHS girls came out fighting. We kept hold of the ball for longer and we made our possession count with being awarded several short corners. Frustratingly we weren’t able to convert the strikes on goal as Clifton had set up a strong defensive line on the goal line.

The match was certainly a squad effort as every girl played their role in this match; particularly as Freya Spruit sustained an injury early on in the game and Lucia Guest battled on after taking a blow to her hand. We were able to rotate in numerous positions to ensure we always had fresh legs but the flexibility of some girls to play out of their preferred position was brilliant. The final score was a 2-4 loss to the Royal High School however we are out to settle the score, next year!

Year 9 County Hockey Tournament 9th October

Clifton College Sports Ground, Bristol

The Year 9 Hockey team travelled to Clifton College’s Spirts Ground in Abbots Leigh Bristol on 9/10. In glorious sunshine the girls had three pool games to play. They faced Clifton College first and found a tough opposition, whilst we were still finding our feet and lost 0-1. Then the Year 9 RHS team found their pace and desire for the ball when they played Prior Park holding them to a draw 1-1. When it came to having their third game vs Hayesfield the team were playing great hockey, keeping their formation dense in the middle and playing out wide, resulting in a 2-0 win meaning the girls came top of their group and went through to the play-off stages. A thrilling game against Colston's ensued and saw Amy Lewis in goal called upon to make many saves, but the speed and skill of Colston's mid and forward line meant they came away with a 4-0 win. It was a fantastic morning of hockey, with the RHS Year 9 team learning and growing throughout. Well done to all who played!

Year 9 Team: Amy Lewin, Pheobe Wirick, Amelie Summers, Clementine Gallen, Lola Record, Holly Stephens, Eleanor Wylie, Emilie Kirkwood, Grace Ford, Ella Powell, Aefre Mak, Charlotte Emptage, Isobel Wright, Amy Hutcheson, Georgina Richardson, Jemima Honeyborne

Year 7 Hockey v Kingswood

The rain didn’t dampen enthusiasm and determination from the Year 7 teams in their matches on Saturday 6/10 at Kingswood School. The A and B teams played first. The A team faced a strong and skilful Kingswood team, but proved equal to the task. In an exciting game that could have gone either way the score line was 3-3 with Sophie Jones scoring a hat trick and Freya McIntyre being awarded Player if the match for staunch defending. Player of the match Freya McIntyre.

Poppy Hewitt -Smith made her debut in goal for the Year 7C team on Saturday in the pouring rain, along with the rest of the team appearing for the first time a a7C team. The girls worked hard for each other, playing the ball out wide from defence and Annabelle Noyce and Lola Higgins making forays into the opposition' s D, but couldn't find a way in to score. Poppy made many excellent saves and the defensive line up of Hannah Elliott, Summer Parry, Charlotte Pawson worked hard to recycle the ball to midfield of Lola Higgins, Alfreda Barrosso-Taylor and Grace Adams to Jojo Knechtli, but were thwarted and Kingswood came away with a 0-4 win. Well played to all though for keeping positive and trying hard all the way through. Player of the match to all the team!

A - 3-3 Player Freya McIntyre

B - lost 3-0 Player Ellie Gresham

C - lost 3-0 Player Poppy H-S
