Residential Trust Netball Tournament in Devon

Friday 2nd November – Sunday 4th November

Our U16 Netball squad travelled to The Manor House Hotel near Okehampton in Devon on Friday to participate in the first Senior GDST Trust Residential Netball tournament. Unfortunately, only four GDST schools attended but the competition was supplemented with other strong opposition and true to form our girls entered into the spirit with enthusiasm and commitment.

We faced eight other teams (four of which came from 2 other Trust schools). The girls started well winning the first two games comfortably and learning from the challenge of their new opposition. We then slipped up against a very beatable Walthamstow school. The girls recovered well going on to win all of their remaining games bar one against a very strong Streatham and Clapham High School. RHS came away with six wins out of eight, placed 3rd overall (out of 9 teams).

After a long day of netball, the girls were able to enjoy the facilities in the hotel. We were entertained by the girls’ ice skating skills, which proved harder than it looks on a plastic ice rink, thank goodness for the penguins! The following day they tried their hand at pedal karting, which was very entertaining; look on our twitter feed, #RHSBSport. With further activities of table tennis and roller-skating, it was a fantastic team building and bonding experience for the girls.

The whole squad played a part in their success;

Lauran Morgan, Phoebe Aisher (Captain), Skye Bayley, Florrie Welch, Poppy Newman, Tabby Gallen, Ellie Mount, Mia Regan (Vice Captain) Tatiana Squire.

Special Awards given to;

Lauren Morgan – Coaches Player, cool and calm under the post and incredible shooting stats

Tabby Gallen – Most Improved, worked so hard to improve every game

Florrie Welch – Players Player, for her all-out commitment to every game and, to her team.

BANES Cross Country

Tuesday 6th November

On a blustery Tuesday, our strong contingent of Royal High runners took on the BANES District Cross Country Championships. For many of our girls this was their first cross country race but for all, it was the chance to qualify for County selection, it was no ‘friendly introduction’ that is for sure! The course ranged from 2km for the Year 7s to 4.5km for Year 11 and was set around the blustery flat fields up on Lansdown.

In the Minors (Year 7’s) we had top 10 placings for Sophie Jones (3rd), Emily Jones (5th). In the Juniors (combined Year 8 & 9) Clemmie Gallen was 3rd and Lottie Silverton in year 8 came an impressive 10th with Evie Butterfield (14th) and Emilie Kirkwood (20th) coming in soon after. Our sole Inters competitor Freya Spruit was impressive in 3rd place and certainly proved an excellent role model to our younger competitors.

The large cohort of runners from the Royal High was fantastic to see. With girls coming home enthused and asking how they could better their performance perhaps cross country is the new number one RHS sport?!

Moment of the day had to be Clemmie bringing two left footed spikes, having to run in trainers and still managing to come in an incredible 3rd place with a huge smile!

Competitors were:

Minors

Sophie Jones, Emily Jones, Izzy Wilkins, Abella Duncan, Dorothy Taylor, Kitty Allan, Evie Wright, Zahra Miller, Yvie Woods.

Juniors

Evie Butterfield, Lottie Ravenhill, Elly Boardman, Lottie Silverton, Jasmine White, Mya Harvey, Alice Watkinson, Emilie Kirkwood, Clemmie Gallen, Christine Weinhardt
