We are delighted to announce the winners of the ‘What will I be in 20 years’ time?’ competition, launched earlier this year in connection with our celebrations of 20 years of RHS.
With three fantastic alumnae-led careers-related experiences as prizes, students from across the school were asked to submit their ideas about what they would like to be in 20 years’ time in any medium of their choosing. The entries were allocated to the prize categories of STEM, Medical and Creative according to content and it was suggested to the girls that winning entries would demonstrate creativity and passion!
Three alumnae, all of whom attended RHS 20 years ago, have generously arranged the prizes whilst alumna Maxine Harle, Class of 2003, has kindly contributed £20 book vouchers to the Medical and STEM prizes. Rebecca Millington, Class of 2005, kindly joined Maxine, Katie, Chloë and Ellie in forming the judging panel who were all overwhelmingly impressed by the quality of the entries. Demonstrating so much more than just creativity and passion, the girls certainly set the panel a tough challenge but after much deliberation the winners are:
STEM
Amélie Bloxham, Year 9
for her creative writing with watercolours about her life in 20 years’ time as Head of Monterey Bay Otter Rescue and Research teams.
The panel of judges described Amélie’s entry as absolutely delightful, exquisitely written and so descriptive, complemented perfectly by the delicate watercolour illustrations. Reminding them a little of Gerald Durrell’s work, they were impressed by the use of creative writing and art to tell a compelling story about a career in the sciences.
Highly Commended:
Evie Campbell, Year 7, for her creative modal with message from herself aged 32, about climate change and plastic pollution, sent in a bottle from Mars in 2039.
Daisy John, Year 10, for her modal of a brain which opened up to reveal a passionate and detailed message about her future life as a neuroscientist.
Medical
Eliza Hyde, Year 10
for her multimedia entry of a first aid box packed with supplies including a video on a memory stick and presentation book.
Described as a beautifully compiled entry and very compelling, the work of a very driven, ambitious girl, the panel enjoyed the multimedia approach and were impressed by how much extracurricular Eliza does to support her career choice.
Highly Commended:
Mathura Kathirgamanathan, Year 11, for her accomplished ‘Doctor or Computer? Humans of Technology? GP vs AI’ essay challenging the future direction of medicine.
Creative
Miranda Pharaoh, Year 9
for her screenplay, and a speech given on a return visit to school in 20 years’ time.
The judges described Miranda’s entry as really excellent, very engagingly written, entertaining and creative. They highlighted Miranda’s script as inspiring and the work of an incredibly gifted and great storyteller.
Highly Commended:
Aoife O’Neill, Year 10, for her inspiring letters between her 2019 and 2039 selves.
Congratulations to our winners!
The Friends of RHS are kindly providing funding to cover the travel costs associated with the prizes and we very much look forward to reporting on how our winners get on in due course. In the meantime, the Head will be hosting a special lunch for all the entrants as well as the alumnae panel of judges who have, between them, enabled the girls to celebrate 20 years of RHS in such an inspiring way.
