We highly recommend that devices are fully insured, as the school will not be liable for loss or damage to devices.

Possible insurance routes:

  • It may be possible to arrange cover through your home insurance, but please check what is covered. Is it just for loss or theft, or is all damage covered (such as cracked screens, etc).
  • It is sometimes possible to buy full accidental damage insurance when you buy the product, but please check the conditions carefully, and consider how the cost compares to doing this separately. A quick comparison between some different retailers and insurers for two years' cover (accidental damage with no excess) for a Microsoft surface ranged from £80 to £254.
  • It is possible to get insurance just for a device. The cost can vary and depends on the replacement cost of the device. We cannot recommend any particular company, but the following link is to a price comparison site that lists a number of potential insurers: Gadget Insurance
  • Some bank accounts offer additional services that may include premium gadget insurance. Where this is the case, it is often important to register the device when bought, as otherwise a claim cannot be made.

When comparing products, do consider whether an excess applies.

So far, there have been relatively few incidents (one cracked screen as of May 2018) but at a sister school, one parent was very pleased they were insured when a device was accidentally dropped and smashed on the first day!

Sometimes a condition of the insurance is that the device has a cover when not in use. This is also something that we strongly recommend.
